The Captain and The Kid - club members Ed DeVries and Doug Johnson - performed at Limin’ Place on Sunday, February 28, bringing along a dozen or so of their musical friends for a “trop rock” house concert with a generous twist - all donations for admission were given to the Grace Packs Program at Morningside Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, to purchase food for kids who otherwise don’t get enough to eat.
It had been Ed and Doug's wish for years to play music at Limin' Place (aka Ed's back yard), which is regarded as the finest house concert venue (with the best audience) on Florida's East Coast. Doug's dream was to make it a fundraiser for hungry kids, and Ed agreed that it would be even more fun to feature other singers besides themselves, and for TCATK to serve as their backing band.
More than six months in the planning and rehearsal stages, the event was supported by Limin’ Place and the Treasure Coast Parrot Head Club, and attended by more than 70 friends and relatives. We raised $1045 for Grace Packs, which will feed the less fortunate kids at Morningside for A MONTH during the busy Easter season!
Before we start showing off with the pictures, here is some important information about Grace Packs, quoting from their brochure...
“The mission and joy of Grace Packs Inc. is to provide weekly weekend food for students who lack an ample food supply, relieving the burden many of these children endure by being hungry.” More than one quarter of the children in St. Lucie County, and on the Treasure Coast, are considered to be “food insecure” - more than 33,000 kids don’t know where their next meal is coming from. The members of the Treasure Coast Parrot Head Club are proud to support Grace Packs through our food donations at our First Wednesday Happy Hour, every month of the year.
Laura Klosterman and Lisa Ferrick are the co-founders of Grace Packs (2011), and Mrs. Klosterman is its Director. We were privileged to have Laura and her husband, John, as our guests at The Captain and The Kid and Friends (she took some great pictures!).
In fact, check out their home page, http://www.gracepacks.org, for more information and a wonderful article about our Limin’ Place event.
Our fundraiser helped a lot - we need to keep it up. The kids can’t be allowed to be hungry.

Jimmy Buffett duet.
